PHILIPSBURG:--- On Wednesday, March 30th, Honorable Minister Silveria Jacobs attended a literacy evening hosted by Group Four and Three teachers of the Methodist Agogic Center at the University of St. Martin.
As reading has been highlighted in a variety of ways during this academic year at the MAC school, the goal of the literacy evening was to inspire more students to read more.
Readers at the literacy evening included Minister Jacobs, Clara Reyes of the National Institute of Art, teachers from the MAC school and others.

Parents Of Lionel Connor School Peeved --- Principal Acting In Conflict Of Interest By Selling School Uniforms.

PHILIPSBURG:--- Parents of students attending the Lionel Connor School in Cole Bay are upset now that the school now that management is forcing them to purchase school uniforms from the Principal of the school. Some of the parents contacted SMN News and stated that the school changed their uniforms and instead of allowing them to purchase the new uniforms from stores at a cheaper price they are being forced to purchase their school uniforms from the Principal whose shirts ranges between $12 to $18 depending on the sizes Read more

PHILIPSBURG:--- The Walichi Basketball Association took time out on Sunday before Game 1 of the Ladies Basketball Championship Finals to honor these women for their contributions to the league and the community in honor of International Women’s Day this past Tuesday, March 8th.

Ms. Inocencia Leonard of Leonard Enterprise was thanked for being the main sponsor of the league this year and for consistently giving back to the youth and community. PHILIPSBURG:--- The St. Maarten Youth Boys Basketball team was crowned champions as they went undefeated against Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao elementary schools at the Fundashon Desaroyo Deportivo Kòrsou competition in Curaçao this weekend. PHILIPSBURG:----  Sint Maarten’s community came out in full force for the second annual SXM DOET event held on March 11th and 12th. Around 1000 volunteers successfully completed 43 projects registered by 30 various organizations from all around the Dutch side of the island. The SXM DOET team was thrilled to see that so many organizations and volunteers that participated last year signed up for SXM DOET 2016. A number of new organizations joined in on the cause, which the team had hoped for, increasing the number of projects and thus the positive effects of SXM DOET on the community at large.
